Essay Exam 6

Q Instructions Behavioral Neuroscience Exam #6 For each of these essays provide a minimum 500-word essay that integrates the materials across the chapter that we have covered. Focus on the essay topic and DO NOT give me list of definitions. That goal of the exam is to identify an underlying principle that connects all of the material you have just learned Essay #6 1. In order to succeed an individual must pick what stimuli to perceive and interact with within a complex environment. A common characteristic among addictive drugs is that they manipulate the reward system of the brain leading to a restriction of addicts’ attention to drug-related stimuli. This attentional focus on drug-related stimuli leads to a lack of attention towards important environmental features that need attention. Pick 2-3 drug types and explain how the drugs' pharmacokinetics manipulate the reward system which leads to the bottleneck of attention of an addict. After explaining how a drug manipulates the reward system of the brain make a link between the brain physiology just explained and the maladaptive behaviors of addicts. Use your book and lecture notes to discuss these pharmacokinetics characteristics that lead to maladaptive behavior. Feel free to use your personal observations to explain how these drug-related constraints have led to maladaptive behavior(s). If you choose to share personal experiences then BE AWARE that many of these drugs are illegal and it might not be in your best interest to share self-identifying information. FYI Pharmacokinetics deals with how a drug is absorbed, diffused, and used throughout the brain. If you explain what area of the brain is activated by a particular class of drugs, how the drug works at this site of action (e.g., Reuptake inhibitor), what happens next in the brain, and finally what behavior is observed you are explaining how the pharmacokinetics characteristics affect behavior. ________________________________________

Drugs that cause dependency must first induce positive behavior in others. Positive reinforcement describes how certain cues affect the behavior that they precede. Positive reinforcement describes the impact of certain signals on the behavior they signal. A behavior will increase in frequency in an environment if an organism repeatedly responds to an appetitive stimulus—one that it will naturally try to approach. The act of taking the drug will be the last response, reinforcing that response, if it was taken via a quick-acting route, such as injection or inhalation.
